We’re delighted to be sending our first edition of Belfast Brief! Thanks for being in from the start!
The idea is pretty simple: every week, we’ll try to find the best things happening around the city, from events and new places to eat, to things worth knowing and a few Belfast discoveries you might otherwise miss.
We’ll keep it useful, local and hopefully save you a bit of scrolling along the way.

📌 THINGS WORTH KNOWING
01: 🏛️ CULTURE NIGHT IS BACK
Belfast Culture Night returns on Friday 18 September, with more than 200 free events planned across the city.
Still two weeks away, but the programme has been announced, so it’s worth having a look and putting a few things in the diary.
02:🚆GRAND CENTRAL IS 1
Belfast Grand Central Station celebrates its first birthday today, marking a year since the new transport hub opened.
It’s also a chance to have your say, with Translink currently consulting on possible changes to services and fares across NI.
⭐ BELFAST BRIEF PICK
European Heritage Open Days
12–13 September · Free
European Heritage Open Days is one of those weekends where Belfast suddenly becomes even more interesting. Buildings, historic places and normally less-accessible spaces open their doors for free, with tours, talks, exhibitions, demonstrations and family activities.
Free access to loads of historic sites, cultural landmarks, and hidden gems across NI. There are some particularly good Belfast options available for free this weekend only. Titanic Belfast is taking part with a free linen-focused programme, while McConnell's Distillery (& Crumlin Rd Gaol), Blackstaff Mill, Clifton House, Belfast Harbour Office and others are opening as part of the weekend.
It's a great opportunity to see places that would normally cost money or simply aren't open to the public in this way.

We’re kicking off the first Belfast Brief with a little something for you. TocToc Coffee on the Lisburn Road is giving five Belfast Brief readers the chance to win a £20 voucher to spend in their café.

12 - 13 September · Botanic Gardens
A Belfast favourite that returns to the city’s calendar each September. It’s a great low-cost family day out, with flowers, food, crafts, demonstrations and plenty of activities taking place throughout Botanic Gardens.

🫂 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Storehouse Belfast · Giving people a practical way to help
Storehouse is a Belfast community organisation supporting people through food, furniture and practical help. The organisation has a large volunteer network doing everything from sorting food and stocking its food shop to delivering furniture and helping at its city-centre sessions.
If you've ever wanted to get involved in something local but weren't sure where to start, Storehouse is holding an online Volunteer Interest Session on Friday 11 September from 10:30–11:30am.
A simple one to keep in mind if you have a bit of time to give.
👀 HIDDEN BELFAST
There's more beneath Saltwater Square than you might think
The new public space outside Belfast Grand Central might look entirely modern, but this part of the city has been important for centuries.
Saltwater Square takes its name from a 17th-century bridge over the River Blackstaff, and parts of the old crossing remain beneath the ground.
There's now a self-guided Saltwater Stories Arts & Heritage Trail around the square, combining public art with stories about the site's history.
